Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about treatment, safety, cost, and getting to our office. Still have a question? Call us at (615) 623-0025.
What does treatment feel like?
You can feel that something is happening in the treatment area, but it should not hurt. Most patients describe the focused waves from the DuoLith as a tingling or tapping feeling. The Emsella chair causes strong muscle contractions, and Emface feels like muscle contractions with warmth, similar to a hot stone massage.
The term “shockwave therapy” can sound alarming, but it is not an electric shock. Our nurse asks for your feedback throughout the session and adjusts the energy for your comfort. Everyone tolerates different levels, and treatment does not have to be painful to work.
How long does a treatment take, and how many will I need?
Most visits take about 30 minutes or less. The number of treatments depends on your condition and how your body responds:
- Urinary incontinence (Emsella): twice a week for 3 weeks
- Erectile dysfunction: 12 initial sessions
- Injured tendons and muscles: one or two sessions a week for two to six weeks, depending on the area
- Emface: four 20-minute sessions
Some patients choose more treatments after their first program, or come back for maintenance. Our protocols are based on published research and approved by our licensed medical director.
Is there anyone who should not be treated?
Yes. Reasons we may not be able to treat you with the Emsella chair or the DuoLith include pregnancy, hemophilia, steroid injections in the last six weeks, and incomplete bone growth in young people. We will ask other questions about your health, and a licensed physician reviews your health questionnaire to decide if our treatments are right for you.
Are these treatments FDA approved?
The Storz DuoLith SD1 is FDA approved for heel pain from chronic plantar fasciitis in adults who have tried other conservative treatments for at least six months. The BTL Emsella is FDA cleared to treat urinary incontinence in women and men. Other uses, including treatment of erectile dysfunction, other soft tissue injuries, and sexual wellness, are considered off-label. We will explain what that means for your treatment at your consultation.
Will my health insurance cover treatment?
Usually not. Insurance does not cover focused shockwave therapy for ED and other conditions, because those uses are off-label. Many patients compare the cost of treatment with the ongoing cost of pads, liners, and adult underwear, or with medication. Financing is available.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, checks, and cash. If you pay in cash, please bring the exact amount. Full payment is due before treatment starts. We also work with Cherry, CareCredit, and American First Finance, which can tell you within minutes if you are approved. Your consultation is free.
Do you have a referral reward?
Yes, and thank you. Call or ask us about the reward we offer when someone you refer completes a treatment package.
Do I have to stop taking my prescribed medicines?
Do not stop any prescribed medicine without first talking to your own health care provider. At your health consultation, please share a list of your prescription and over-the-counter medicines, herbs, and supplements.
During focused shockwave treatment we may advise you to avoid anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. Shockwave therapy works by encouraging a healing response that brings blood to the injured area, and NSAIDs work against inflammation. We will ask our medical director whether you should take NSAIDs during your treatment. You may take NSAIDs during Emsella treatment.
Can I still take Viagra, Cialis, or similar medicines?
Most likely, yes. Every ED patient completes a health history form and an ED questionnaire for our medical director to review. Some studies have found that many men can reduce their dose of these medicines after low-intensity shockwave therapy and still get an erection. Individual results vary.
Do I need a physical exam?
No. For ED treatment, you fill out a health history form and an ED questionnaire, and our medical director reviews them. There is no physical exam.
