Sciatica

Typically 4 to 6 treatments

Sciatica is pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling that runs along the sciatic nerve. It is usually felt in the buttock and down the back of the leg, sometimes to the knee or foot. It may come from an injury, a back problem such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, or lumbar spinal stenosis, or a tight muscle pressing on the nerve, such as the piriformis muscle in the hip.

Wave It Away DuoLith treatment of my sciatica pain was greatly effective in getting me back to playing tennis and out of pain quickly. Prior to treatment, I had spent nearly 4 weeks in pain and resting my leg day after day on a heating pad with no relief. Because I had successful treatment for metatarsalgia pain with the DuoLith 5 years ago, I chose to schedule an appointment for my sciatica issue. I am not exaggerating when I report that my pain was 80% improved after my first shock wave treatment and felt 100% improved after 4 sessions. It is truly impressive how beneficial these treatments improved my ability to get back to my normal activities without pain. This facility is professional and the staff are very helpful and kind. I've recommended Wave It Away to family and friends who could benefit from this amazing technology.

Hamstring pull

Typically 3 to 6 treatments

A hamstring pull is an injury to the large muscles in the back of the thigh. Sprinters are especially prone to it. Focused shockwave therapy is used to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the injured muscle.

Shin splints

Typically 4 to 6 treatments

Shin splints cause pain along the inside of the tibia, the large bone between the knee and the ankle. Runners, athletes, dancers, and military recruits are especially prone to them.

Calf strain

Typically 3 treatments

A calf strain happens when the muscles in the lower leg are overstretched.

How treatment works

Focused shockwave therapy

Focused shockwave therapy sends short pulses of acoustic energy into an injured tendon, muscle, or other soft tissue. The goal is to increase blood flow and support healing in an area that has stopped improving on its own. We use the Storz Medical DuoLith SD1.

There is no surgery, no anesthesia, and no injection. Most patients feel a tingling or tapping sensation during the session, and our nurse adjusts the energy for your comfort. You can go back to work or your normal routine right after.

Before you start

Shockwave therapy is not right for everyone. We do not treat people who are pregnant, have hemophilia, have had steroid injections in the last six weeks, or are still growing (incomplete bone growth). We will ask about your health and medicines, and a licensed physician reviews your answers before treatment.

Shockwave treatment works by encouraging a healing response, so we may ask you to avoid anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen during your treatment course. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without talking to your doctor first.

About FDA status. The Storz DuoLith SD1 is FDA approved for heel pain from chronic plantar fasciitis in adults who have tried other conservative treatments for at least six months. Using it for other conditions is considered off-label. Our medical director reviews your health history before treatment, and results vary from person to person.
