How it works

Focused acoustic pulses, no incisions

The DuoLith SD1 creates focused acoustic pulses, called shockwaves, inside a hand-held applicator. The pulses pass through the skin to the injured tendon, muscle, or soft tissue. They are meant to increase blood flow and support repair in areas that have stopped healing on their own.

Unlike some radial shockwave devices, it does not require numbing cream. Most patients describe a tingling or tapping feeling. Our nurse asks for your feedback throughout the session and adjusts the energy for your comfort. It does not have to hurt to work.

  • No surgery or incisions
  • No anesthesia, needles, or injections
  • No added medication
  • No downtime, so you can go back to your day
  • Visits of about 30 minutes in a private room

What we use it for

Most of our shockwave patients come in for chronic pain in a tendon, muscle, or joint area:

We also use low-intensity shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction and for chronic prostatitis and pelvic pain.

How many treatments?

Treatment for injured tendons and muscles is usually one or two sessions a week for two to six weeks, depending on the area. Our ED protocol is 12 sessions. Your plan depends on the condition and how your body responds.

Before you start

We do not treat people who are pregnant, have hemophilia, have had steroid injections in the last six weeks, or are still growing (incomplete bone growth). A licensed physician reviews your health questionnaire before treatment. We may ask you to avoid anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen during treatment, because shockwave therapy works by encouraging a healing response. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without talking to your doctor.

About FDA status. The Storz DuoLith SD1 is FDA approved for heel pain from chronic plantar fasciitis in adults who have tried other conservative treatments for at least six months. Other uses, including erectile dysfunction, are off-label. Results vary from person to person.
